In 2015, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in New York City invited artists to discuss how to make its new building in Lower Manhattan a safe space for all people. The Whitney is just one of many museums, restaurants and schools that are currently redesigning bathrooms to be more gender inclusive. A key part of this is their design for bathroom signs. While some use the phrase “All Gender Restroom,” others are marked “Gender Neutral Bathroom” or “Gender-Inclusive Bathroom.” Many of the signs also featured braille and noted that the bathrooms were handicap accessible.
